St. Margaret Foundation
Filling in the Gaps with Hope

The mission of St. Margaret Foundation is to be a valued source of support for UPMC St. Margaret and the health and wellness of the communities it serves.

St. Margaret Foundation is a standalone 501(c)(3), 509(a)(3) non-profit organization, autonomous of UPMC, which supports UPMC St. Margaret and the health and wellness of the communities it serves with projects chosen by the Board of Directors. In today’s healthcare environment there are patient needs that cannot always be met with insurance, Medicare, Medicaid and self payment alone. That’s where St. Margaret Foundation comes in – we fill in the gaps with hope.

2011 Fall Issue of The Halo available now!

The addition of the Patient/Family Resource Pavilion will cost $2.5 million of which the hospital will fund half and the Foundation will raise the other $1.25 million. As of July, 2011, $950,900 has been donated for the Patient Resource Pavilion with S&T Bank having named the Respite Area and Martha Mack Lewis Foundation having named the Medical Library. Other major donors include the St. Margaret Foundation, its Auxiliary and individuals from the board and community. Construction will begin in the fall of 2011 and be complete in the fall of 2012. The Pavilion will be 4,700 square feet of new space and will serve three functions:

1.) A calm escape away from the bedside for patients and family members to read or relax. Lectures may be given here in the off hours.
2.) A medical library for patients and family members to find free health information and free pamphlets and resources with the oversight of a medical librarian.
3.) An electronic resource center for families and patients to access computers, make a phone call, send a fax, run off printed material, charge a cell phone and access other electronic needs to restore them to their daily routine.

For information on how to support the Pavilion, please contact Foundation President Mary Lee Gannon at 412-784-4277.

A Patient Testimonial on How We Fill in the Gaps with Hope

Lawrenceville resident, Louise Ballou, was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in October, 2009.  She needed aggressive chemotherapy and radiation.  Unable to drive, she had no other means of transportation to her treatments.  St. Margaret Foundation arranged for cab service for one week so that she could access her treatments while awaiting approval of their transportation funding.  As of her last scan on May 5, she is cancer free and gave everyone in the office a big hug!
Examples of HOW we fill in the gaps with hope:

  • The Free Rides for Seniors transportation van transports senior citizens to the grocery store, doctor’s offices, pharmacy, UPMC St. Margaret Hospital, discount stores, residences and other necessary locations.  The Foundation also supports the “Faith-in-Action” program which helps seniors who are outside of the perimeter for the Free Rides van to receive transportation.
  • The Bed Fund annually grants $30,000 toward services for patients to help cover services not covered by traditional medical insurance and or Medicare.
·            $25 pays for a holiday meal for a family of four who are patients at our Family Health Centers
·            $37 pays for one tetanus/diphtheria immunization shot
·            $58 pays for one flu shot
·            $75 pays for an eye exam for a diabetic patient
·            $80 pays for one night's lodging for a family who has traveled far to be with their loved one in the hospital
·            $100 pays for one vial of insulin for a diabetic patient
·            $150 pays for an air conditioner for a patient with pulmonary disease
·            $500 replaces a water heater lost in a flash flood
·            $650 replaces a washer and a dryer lost in a flash flood
·            $1,000-$2,000 pays for numerous medical needs at UPMC St. Margaret Family Health Centers in Bloomfield-Garfield, Lawrenceville, and New Kensington where the vast majority of patients are below the poverty level.

  • The UPMC St. Margaret Family Health Centers in Lawrenceville, Bloomfield-Garfield and New Kensington are supported by St. Margaret Foundation as roughly 70% of the patients are uninsured or underinsured.  The Foundation helps to fund immunization shots, medication, transportation, food vouchers, nutrition education, crutches, thermometers, books for children, Teddy Bear Clinics, eye examinations for patients with diabetes, and other health care services.
  • The Oncology Fund funds unmet needs for our cancer patients.  Much of the time support is needed for transportation for patients who are too ill to take the bus to their chemotherapy.
  • The Employee Emergency Fund provides nearly $30,000 annually to help employees who have suffered a medical emergency or natural disaster.
  • The Patient Family Resource Pavilion Fund is a capital campaign fund raising $1.25 million for a new addition to the hospital that will provide a peaceful place for patients and families.  The Pavilion will open in fall of 2012.  It will provide:
  1. A calm escape away from the bedside for patients and family members to read or relax.  Lectures may be given here in the off hours.
  2. A medical library for patients and family members to find free health information and free pamphlets and resources with the oversight of a medical librarian.
  3. An electronic resource center for families and patients to access computers, make a phone call and access other electronic needs to restore them to their daily routine.

This Pavilion is designed with attention to quiet space in a homelike atmosphere and will be open to the general public.

Examples of  WHO we serve by filling in the gaps with hope:

  • A woman who needed seven hours a day of aggressive chemotherapy had no way to get to the hospital for treatment. The hospital’s social services department initiated the paperwork for her to receive public funded medical transportation that would not take effect for a week. The Foundation funded cab fare for that week so that she could begin her treatment.
  • A 24-year-old mother from Erie with a spinal tumor was granted $100 for the purchase of Christmas presents for her children for what was her last Christmas alive.
  • A man with diabetes needed a month’s worth of sterile gauze pads to keep wounds on his leg from recurring and did not have the means to pay for them. The Foundation funded gauze pads so that his infection would not recur.
  • A woman with a terminal diagnosis was referred home from the hospital for hospice care. The Foundation paid for rental of a special bed that she needed so that her end-of-life care would be comfortable.
  • An employee of UPMC St. Margaret employee was diagnosed with bone cancer and had fallen behind in her mortgage due to her inability to work. The Foundation paid one month of her mortgage payment.
  • A nineteen-year-old mother was hospitalized with chronic asthma. Her husband had lost his job and medical benefits. When she was discharged from the hospital, the Foundation paid for a supply of medication and donated $100 to meet their immediate food needs.
  • A single mother of three children and employee at UPMC St. Margaret has a three-year-old son with leukemia requiring her to spend 24 hours a day at Children’s Hospital. St. Margaret Foundation provided funds to help with her monthly bills.
  • A young girl with bone cancer would not have been permitted to return home from the hospital (as opposed to a nursing home) if the Foundation had not contributed toward having the carpeting in her bedroom replaced; floors replaced; and walls repainted with a special paint to insure a bacteria free environment.
